Jackie Shroff Biography

Jackie Shroff can be said to Subhash Ghai’s discovery. Though Jackie Shroff entered the industry through Dev Anand’s Swamy dada, his real entry to Bollywood was through Subhash Ghai’s Hero in 1982 opposite Meenakshi Sheshadri and has done many films for Subhash Ghai including Karma, Ram Lakhan, Trimurthy, Saudagar and Khal Nayak. So, almost in all Subhash Ghai movies, Jackie Shroff was casted as main hero or supporting role. His name ‘Jackie’ was also given by Subhash Ghai when his movie Hero was released.

Jackie Shroff worked in about 150 movies. He did many movies along with Anil Kapoor, a few of them directed by Subhash Ghai. Movies of this trio include Ram Lakhan, Trimurthy and Karma. Apart from these movies, these heroes of 80’s have worked together in 1942 A love story, Parinda, Gardish, Kabhi na kabhi, Yudh and Andar Bahar.  Jackie Shroff was well appreciated for the movie Tere Meherbaaniyan, in which a dog played the central role. The movie Kaash of 1987 was critically well acclaimed and Jackie’s role was well appreciated though the movie couldn’t do much at box office.

When reached 90’s, the heroine with whom Jackie worked most was Manisha Koirala. This pair worked together in a string of movies – Milan, 1942 A love story and Agnisakshi. Gradually he stepped down to character roles and supporting roles. His role as the elder brother of Aftab in Kya yehi pyar hai, doctor friend of Salman Khan in Kyon ki, industrialist in ‘Baaz- a bird in danger’ opposite Karishma Kapoor,as Devdas’ friend Chunni  babu in Devdas and as Carlos in Apna Sapna money money were well appreciated. He did the role of villain in a few movies like Naksha.  

He did the role of a business man in a comic style in King Uncle, one among the debut movies of Shah Rukh Khan. He has also worked with SRK in Trimoorthy and 1 2 ka 4.  He won the best actor award once, for the movie Parinda. He has been nominated several times for supporting roles in the movies 1942-A love story, Khal Nayak, Rangeela,  Agni sakshi, Yadein etc. He won it twice for Rangeela and 1942 A love story.
