Gajra Kottary Biography

Gajra Kottary is an Indian writer who writes screenplays for movies and TV shows. She also authored a few books. As a TV script writer, she is best known for Balika Vadhu which she co-scripted aside many writers including Kovid Gupta. Astitva...Ek Prem Kahani, Jyoti, Panaah, Satrangi Sasural, Buddha, Ek Veer Ki Ardaas...Veera, Godh Bharaai and Hamare Tumhare are other shows which she co-scripted. The Last Laugh (2003), Broken melodies (2011) and Once Upon a Star (2014) are her fiction works as a writer. She has won all the major writing awards for television multiple times. Dhe wrote the story for the 55 episode mega historical television serial Buddha.

Gajra hails from Delhi, where she completed her education. She completed her Master’s in Journalism from Indian Institute of Mass Communication as topper, winning the gold medal. After completing her journalism course, she worked as a journalist for a while, before she switched on to writing for TV shows and a few books. She has worked as a journalist with The Statesman in Delhi. She also wrote columns for many dailies and magazines then.

As a writer, she published her first collection of short stories in 1996. The book was titled, Fragile Victories. Later she published yet another collection of stories, The Last Laugh. In 2011, she published her first novel titled, Broken Melodies. She co-authored her first Hindi novel, Koraa Kagaz. Once Upon a Star is her latest published work. Currently she writes for television shows.

As a writer of television shows, she was introduced to the field by Mahesh Bhatt, Bollywood filmmaker. Hamare Tumhare in 2000 was her first work. Her association with long-running soaps began with Astitva...Ek Prem Kahani two years later. Since then she is regular writing television shows.
