Deepika Chikhalia Biography

Deepika Chikhalia is a television actress who rose to fame with successful television serial, Ramayana telecasted during 80s in Doordarshan. She was paired opposite Arun Govil in this serial directed by Bollywood director, Ramanand Sagar. Apart from doing television serials, she has also acted in a few movies though not as success as her television career. She has also worked in Ramanand Sagar’s another popular Doordarshan serial – Vikram aur Betaal.

Deepika Chikhalia was born on 29 April 1965. Chikhalia grew up in Pali Hill area of Bandra, a suburb of Mumbai. Vikram aur Betaal was her first successful television serial. Seeing its success its director casted her opposite the hero of same serial in his next venture – Ramayan. Ramayan was the first Indian television serial based on Hindu epics and that’s the reason why it was immensely popular among public also. She arose as a public iconic figure, and she along with Arun Govil, enjoyed star fame during 80’s. Not only that, her public figure helped her to earn easy votes at assembly elections too. She stood for elections at Baroda constituency in 1991 as a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate and riding her fame as a religious icon, she became Member of Parliament in the Indian Lok Sabha in 1991. It was a year when whole votes went to congress favour following the unfortunate death of former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi. Yet she was one among those candidates of BJP who were able to win in the elections conducted during 1991.

As an actress, she has worked for Bollywood and Bengali. A few of her Bollywood films are - Bhagwaan Dada, Raat Ke Andhere Mein, Khudai, Sun meri laila and Cheek. Yet people loved her to see her in Sita’s avatar than glamorous roles and all these movies failed at box office too. She has also worked in a Bengali movie - Asha O Bhalobasha released in the year 1989 and Tamil movie Naangal released in the year 1992. She is married to Hemant Topiwala, owner of Shingar Bindi and Tips and Toes cosmetics. They have two daughters - Nidhi Topiwala and Juhi Topiwala.
