C. P. Joshi Biography

C. P. Joshi is a prominent politician from Rajasthan belonging to Indian National Congress. He is a former parliamentarian and has served as the minister of Road Transport and Highways and Railway in Manmohan Singh’s ministry, after Mamata banerjee’s quit from UPA in 2012 and Pawan Kumar Bansal resigned as Railways Minister in 2013. He was the first term member of Parliament. However he faced defeat in the 16th Lok sabha elections. He is a Professor of Psychology at Udaipur's Mohanlal Sukhadia University.

 

He was born in Nathdwara, Rajasthan in 1950. He completed his school education from his hometown. He took LLB from M. B. College Udaipur and also completed Master’s in physics. He began his career as a lecturer at the M. B. College before entering active politics. Joshi was a Professor of Psychology at Udaipur's Mohanlal Sukhadia University when he quit his job to join politics. He was encouraged for his political activities by Mohan Lal Sukhadia, founder of modern Mewar.

 

He was elected as Student's Union President for Mohanlal Sukhadia University in 1973. He participated in State assembly elections for the first time in 1980. He was elected from Nathdwara Assembly. He was later elected for the terms - 1985, 1998 and 2003. As an MLA, he has contributed a lot for the developments of his constituency, aiming at education and transportation. In 1998 he became a minister for the first time. He was given the portfolio of Panchayti Raj, Education, Rural Development, Public Health Engineering, Policy Planning, and IT.

 

He was appointed President of the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee in 2003. He played a significant role in the win of his party in 2008 assembly elections. However he lost his seat by just one vote, becoming the second candidate of Indian Assembly elections to loss a contest by just one vote.
