Mamata Banerjee Biography

Mamata Banerjee, current chief minister of West Bengal is the founder of Trinamool Congress. She was born on 5th January 1955, to Gayetri and Promileswar Banerjee in Kolkata. She involved in political affairs from her younger days. She became the secretary of state Mahila Congress when was a college – going girl.

 

She got her honors degree in history from Jogamaya Devi College. She got masters degree in Islamic History from University of Calcutta and got a degree in education from Shri Shikshayatan College and got law degree from the Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri Law College, Kolkata.

 

She had been the Minister of Railways twice, Minister of State for Human Resource Development of Youth Affairs, sports, women and child development once and Minster of Coal one. In the assembly election of West Bengal 2011, Trinamool Congress and its supporting parties under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee could win over 77% of the total seats. This put an end to the 34 year rule of Left Front. She is the first women chief minister of West Bengal. The industrialization of the communist government made forceful land acquisition from the farmers made the downfall of Buddhadev Pattacharya and her opposition to this and the promise to settle the land back marked the victory of Trinamool Congress.

 

In 1984 election she was selected from Jadavpur parliamentary Constituency and became the youngest member of the parliament. She retained the Kolkata South constituency in the elections 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2009. In the year 1997, she came out of the Congress party and founded All India Trinamool Congress. In 1999 she joined hands with BJP. Being a railway minster at that time, she made lots of reforms in the department and introduced many new trains.

 

She walked out of NDA cabinet and allied with the Congress Party to meet 2001 elections. She faced set back in that election and the election of 2005. She voiced a strong protest against Nandigram issue. Her party could do well in the 2009 parliamentary election with 19 seats. After sitting in the seat of Chief Minister of West Bengal, the first decision she made was to return 400 acres of the land to the unwilling farmers. The massive victory in the election was an added feather in her crown.
