Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay Biography

Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay was a prominent writer of Bengali literature. He has worked as a journalist and editor with many publications. Many of his works have been adopted for feature films on big screen, both Hindi and Bengali. Bollywood classics - Khamoshi, Kora Kaagaz, Bemisal and Safar are adapted versions of his stories/novels. He has authored more than books which includes both novels and short stories. Saat Paake Bandha was adapted by Bengali feature film of the same name, which starred Suchitra Sen in pivot role, while its Hindi version, titled Kora Kaagaz starred Jaya Bhaduri in lead role. But its climax of both versions had different endings. Hindi version was directed by Anil Ganguly, while its Bengali version by Ajoy Kar.

 

He was born in 1920 in Bajrajogini, now Dhaka of Bangladesh to Paresh Chandra Mukhopadhyay and Tarubala Devi. He was born in a big family of 10 children. He took graduation in commerce from Hooghly Mohsin College. His first story was acclaimed work Nurse Mitra, published in the newspaper Basumati. The movie was later made to feature film, both in Hindi and Bengali – titled Khamoshi and Deep Jwele Jai respectively. The movie starred Rajesh Khanna, Waheeda Rehman and Dharmendra in Hindi version while Suchitra Sen played the female lead in its Bengali version. His first novel was Swaha, published in the same daily. Later it was renamed as Ruper Hate Bikikini.

 

His first published book was the novel, Kaalchakra. It was his fourth published novel – Chalachal which established Ashutosh as a talented writer. Among his published works adopted to feature film, he wrote the script of Kaal Tumi Aleya. Amar Kantak, Nabaraag and Panchatapa are other adopted Bengali movies from his works. He was one of the most cinematised authors of Bengali literature and known for his story telling about love and relationships.
