Syam Sudhakar Biography

Syam Sudhakar is an Indian writer and poet from the state of Kerala. He writes Malayalam and English poetry, and has published books in both these languages. He is an English lecturer too. He hails from Palakkad district, and he writes poems in his native dialect. Apart from poetry he is also associated with literary criticism. In 2007-08 he won Vallathol Poetry Prize for poetry conducted by the Kerala Kalamandalam. He was awarded the Madras Kerala Samajam Poetry Award, Madras Kerala Samajam, Chennai in 2008. His published works include - Earpam (2001), Syam Sudhakar Kavithaikal (2008), Drenched by the Sun (2013), Slicing the Moon: A Screen book of Poems (2013) and Avasanathe Kollimeen (2014).

Dr. Syam Sudhakar, a young poet was born in year 1983 in Vadanamkurussi, Palakkad District, Kerala. He received Masters in English Literature from the University of Madras in 2008 and Master of Philosophy from Presidency College, Chennai in 2009. He received his PhD form University of Madras, Chennai, specializing in the Beat Generation writers. His thesis was ‘Beat After Beat: Re-contextualising Performance and Subculture ‘. After completion of studies, he started his career as a lecturer and taught at different colleges. Currently he is a lecturer at St. Thomas College, Thrissur, where he teaches English.

Most of his poems resonate with strong visual images. Visual media culture that defines this generation has left a mark on him and it reflects in his poetry too. He is one among the most popular writers of younger generation from Kerala. One of his early recognitions in poetry is - Nandita Poetry Award, which he received in year 2002. Some of his research interests include - Poetry, Gender, Subculture, Performance, Regional Literature, Translation, Masculinity, Aesthetics etc.
