Tapan Kumar Pradhan Biography

Tapan Kumar Pradhan is a noted writer, poet and activist from Laxmisagar in Bhubaneswar, Orissa. He won Sahitya Akademi's Golden Jubilee Indian Literature Translation Prize for Poetry for the English translation of his own work - Kalahandi, a poetry collection in Oriya language. ‘The Storm’, Epitaph, Boddhisattva and Wind in the Afternoon are his critically acclaimed poems through which he received recognition. He is married to Suvashree, a trained Odissi dancer. They got married in 2001 and the couple has one son.

 

He was born on 22 October 1972 in Bhubaneshwar. The use of hidden symbols and allusion in his literary compositions make him a powerful writer. While translating poetry, he always retains the original rhythm and its music. As a writer, he has contributed to English and Oriya literature in the form of poems, essays, cartoons, sketches, caricatures and short stories. He has made translations of Maupassant's little known French poems to English. Compilation of huge collection rare folk songs from different countries is another worthy contribution of this author. His works in the form of poems, stories, cartoons, sketches etch have been published in many Indian journals. "Two Women", "I, She and the Sea", "Orphan", "My German Friend", "A Cab for Seventeen", "A Taste for Rats", "Run up to Kill" and "How I Became A Writer" are among his noted columns published in journals.

 

Pradhan was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Utkal University in 2001. The Kandh-Pana conflict in Kandhamal district and Hindu-Muslim relations in Bhadrak and Harijan-Savarna caste dynamics in Jajpur district of Orissa are his major research works. He has also experience as a banker with Reserve bank of India since 1999.
