Waheeda Rehman Biography

Waheeda Rehman is an Indian film actress who concentrated in Hindi film industry. She was a leader actress in the time period of fifties, sixties and seventies. She has acted in many notable films like Pyaasa, 12 O Clock, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Solva Saal, Kaagaz Ke Phool, Baat Ek Raat Ki, Kohra, Guide, Teesri Kasam, etc.

 

She was born on 14th May 1936 in Chengalpattu in Tamil Nadu in a traditional Muslim family. Her father served as a District Commissioner and died when she was young. She learnt Bharatnatyam from T. K. Mahalingam Pillai at Sri Rajarajeswari Bharata Natya Kala Mandir at Bombay. She initially acted in some Tamil and Telugu films and she was taken to Hindi film industry by Guru Dutt.

 

Her unfulfilled aim in her life was to become a doctor. She started her acting career in the year 1954 and her Telugu films Jayasimha and Rojulu Marayi in 1955 were successful. She acted in the Tamil film Kaalam Maari Pochu in1956. Her debut film in Hindi was C. I. D. She acted in the lead role in the film Pyaasa.  Her next film was Kaagaz Ke Phool.

 

She paired with Dev Anand in many successful films. She also acted along with Dilip Kumar, Rajesh Kanna and Dharmendra. She won Filmfare Best Actress Award for the film Guide in 1965. She won National Award for Reshma Aur Shere in 1971.

 

She married Shahsi Rekhi whose screen name was Kamaljeet on 27th April 1974. She had two children, Sohail and Kashvi. Her husband died on 21st November 2000. She is living in Bombay at present.

 

She was nominated for the Filmfare Best Actress awards for the films Ram Aur Shyam and Khamoshi and nominated for Filmfare Best Supporting Actress awards for the films Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Kabhi Kabie, Namkeen and Lamhe.

 

She received Filmfare Best Actress Award for the films Guide and Neel Kamal. She also won Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in the year 1994. She was awarded Padma Shri in 1972 and Padma Bhushan in 2011. She got Bengal Film Journalists Association Awards for the film Teesri Kasam and NTR National Award in 2006.
