Annupamaa Krishnaswami Biography

Annupamaa Krishnaswami, shortly known as Annupamaa or Anupama is a successful playback singer of Indian movies. She has an amazing record with music maestro A. R. Rahman with whom she has sung majority of hits. Her first big break to the industry ‘Chandra lekha’ of Thiruda thiruda (1993) was given by none other than A. R. Rahman, followed by ‘Hullam hulla’ of Bombay, ‘Jaan tum ho meri’ of Viswavidhatha and the latest, pappu can’t dance saala of Jaane tu ya jaane naa. Throughout the years, career spanning to 2 decades, she has only improved and has delivered numerous dancing numbers to Rahman fans. She has also sung songs for Ilaiyaraaja, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Deva, Vidyasagar, Karthik Raja, Khurshid Alam Qawwal and Yuvan Shankar Raja. She is known for her special type of voice that suits all types of electronic songs. Chandralekha song is the best instance.

Anupama was born on 2 September 1967 in Chennai. She started training in Carnatic music from the age of 4 and used to participate in school competitions. Her schooling was completed at St. Anthony's Senior Secondary School, New Delhi and later she took BA Degree in English from Kamala Nehru College, New Delhi in 1989. She discontinued Mass Communication Course from Indian Institute of Mass Communication in New Delhi to pursue a career in singing. She became a successful ad jingle composer and singer in the early nineties. She worked with A. R. Rahman, in many jingles of 1990’s, who was then A. S. Dilip Kumar. Ponds Dreamflower Talc and Soap, Medimix soap, Tatia Resorts, Diplomat Whisky, AVT and Deepika Coconut Oil are a few jingles.

Her debut happened through Rahman’s Puthiya Mukham in the year 1993, with the song - July Maddham Vanthal followed by the most popular Thiruda thiruda song. Thus she made successful debut in playback singing. She was selective and used to sing to songs that she feels the best. That’s the reason why, though her songs are less in number, still look fresh as if they were recorded just one year ago. Anupama is married to J. Murali Krishnan, Executive Vice President & National Creative Director of Optima Response and they reside in Mahalingapuram, Tamil Nadu right now.
