Uddhab Bharali Biography

Uddhab Kumar Bharali, shortly called Uddhab Bharali is an Indian inventor with about 118 innovations to his credit. Most of his inventions were done since late 1980s. For his overall contributions towards the field of Science & Engineering - Grassroots Innovation, government of India honoured him with Padma Shri in 2019. President’s Grassroots Innovation Award, Shristi Samman Award, NASA Tech Create the Future Design Contest in 2012 and 2013 and Rashtriya Ekta Samman are other major honours received by him.

 

Dr. Uddhab Bharali was born on 7 April 1962 in North Lakhimpur, Assam. He was born into a business family. He schooled from North Lakhimpur and was a brilliant student in school studies. He used to ask difficult questions to the teacher in mathematics for which he was often sent out of the class as punishment. As a child he had great quest and curiosity in knowledge. In fact he was double promoted twice during his schooling. Even while studying in class 8, he could solve problems of higher secondary classes. Later he studied engineering from Jorhat Engineering College and Institute of Engineers Madras Chapter in Chennai. He had to leave studies in middle, because of the financial situation of his family.

 

To help his family get over the debt, he discontinued his studies at AMIE and decided to start a polythene cover making business. He designed his own machine, thus saving a lot of money needed for the purchase of new machinery. Since then he continued building machines, rather than buying them. Following the death of his brother in 1995, he became the sole breadwinner of his family. He started earning money by his innovations, and made around 120 new innovations.
