M. C. Nambudiripad Biography

M. C. Nambudiripad was a pioneer of popular science writing in Malayalam language. He also translated many books to Malayalam. He was a recognised popular science writer in Malayalam. He was a founder member of Sasthra Sahithya Samithi, a public forum on science and science writing in 1957, and the parent of Sasthra Sahithya Parishad. The Development of Science, Through the Eyes of Science, Autobiography of Earth and Martians are some of his early works in science which earned him recognition. He lived during the period, 2 February 1919 – 26 November 2012.


M. C. Nambudiripad’s full name is Moothiringode Chithrabhanu Nambudiripad. He was born on 2 February 1919 in Pattambi, Palakkad district. He belonged to a family of literals. Noted writer of pre-independent India, Moothiringode Bhavathrathan Namboothiripad was his elder brother. He was 16 years older to him. O M C Narayanan Nambudiripad, Sanskrit scholar was his uncle. He had six years of Vedic studies and then started his schooling in Ottapalam. He later graduated in Physics from Tamil Nadu and later professional training at Public Health Laboratory, Thiruvananthapuram.


As a writer he rose to prominence through countless books he wrote about science. In fact he also promoted learning of science among students. He also translated several books. During his last years he translated J. D. Bernal’s "Science in History" into Malayalam and published in 4 volumes. The book received Kerala Sahithya Academy Award for best translation in 2002. At the age of 90, he translated one more book of Bernal - "The Social Function of Science". The book was published in 2012. He passed away same year in November. He suffered a massive heart attack at the age of 93.
