Rajendra Bhatia Biography

Rajendra Bhatia is a very famous mathematician, scientist, author, and educator from Delhi. He currently serves as a professor of mathematics at Ashoka University. Bhatia founded the series Texts and Readings in Mathematics in 1992, and the series Culture and History of Mathematics on the history of Indian mathematics. He is a recipient of INSA Medal for Young Scientists in 1982, and was most recently awarded with the Hans Schneider prize, named after the famous British-American mathematician, Hans Schneider. A very talented mathematician of present times, he has served on the editorial boards of several major international journals such as Linear Algebra and Its Applications, and the SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications.

 

Rajendra Bhatia was born in the year 1952. He completed his bachelor and master’s degree in Mathematics from University of Delhi. Later he completed his Ph. D under the famous probabilist K. R. Parthasarathy from Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. For his Ph.D. and later, his research works were concentrated mostly on Probability, Statistics and the subjects related to it. Matrix inequalities, calculus of matrix functions, means of matrices and matrix analysis are some of his major interests. In mathematics, the Bhatia–Davis inequality was named after Rajendra Bhatia and Chandler Davis.

 

He has authored several research works associated with mathematics and won many accolades also. In 1995 he won the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology in Mathematical Science, and most recently Hans Schneider prize. He is currently a professor at Ashoka University. He had a long term association with Indian Statistical Institute, and has travelled extensively across the globe representing his country. His books on matrix analysis have become classics in the field and are followed by engineers, students etc. In fact he is the most highly cited mathematician from India at present times.
