Purshotam Lal Biography

Purshotam Lal is an Indian physician known to be a leading cardiologist of the country. He performed the first case of non-surgical aortic valve replacement with core valve, both for the first time in the world. He has given some significant contributions to the field of cardiology for which government of India recognized him with Padma Shri (1993), Padma Bhushan (2003) and Padma Vibhushan (2009). He is the first interventional cardiologist to receive three of the highest awards in the country. He is also a recipient of Dr. B. C. Roy Award (2004) for innovations in interventional cardiology. His name has been listed several times in Limca Book of World Records. Jawaharlal Nehru International Excellence Award in 1990, Rajiv Gandhi Excellence Award in 1991 – the list is not ending. He has also authored many books related to his field.

 

Purshotam Lal was born in the year 1954. He holds medical degrees such as MBBS, MD, DM and FACC. He has been trained in the UK, USA, and Germany and before he started his full-fledged career as a cardiologist. He earned global recognition as a leading cardiologist over the years. He has been affiliated with Metro Hospital for many years. Non Interventional Cardiology, Complex Angioplasties, Multivessel Angioplasties, Electrophysiology, Valvuloplasty, Congenital Heart Diseases, Percutaneous Complex Interventions and Preventive Cardiology are his areas of interest. He specializes in non-surgical closure of heart holes, non-surgical replacement of valves, and treatment of multiple sclerosis.

 

As a cardiologist, he has introduced many new technics to Indian medical field, which were not used before. He is credited to performing the largest number of angioplasties/stenting in India, and also introduced more than 20 interventional procedures for the first time in India. He has been a Fellow at American College of Cardiology, American College of Medicine and Royal College of Physicians (Canada).
