Manjul Bhargava Biography

Manjul Bhargava is a Canadian-American mathematician of Indian origin. In 2014, he was awarded the Fields Medal for developing powerful new methods in the geometry of numbers, which he applied to count rings of small rank and to bound the average rank of elliptic curves. Fields medal is regarded as Nobel Prize in the field of mathematics, and he is the first mathematician of Indian origin to receive this award. His contributions to number theory have earned him numerous awards and honours. In 2015, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan by government of India.

 

Bhargava was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in the year 1974. Both his parents are Indians, belonging to Hindu family, who migrated to US before Manjul was born. Manjul’s younger days were spent in Long Island, New York. His mother Mira Bhargava too is a mathematician, and a professor too, who taught him early lessons of mathematics. By the age of 14, he completed his schooling as well as computer studies. Bhargava received his doctorate from Princeton in 2001, under the guidance of famous British mathematician Andrew Wiles.

 

Bhargava is a tabla player too, who got opportunity to learn it from Zakir Hussain. He also learnt Snaskrit from his grandfather Purushottam Lal Bhargava, a well-known scholar of Sanskrit. He was named one of Popular Science Magazine's "Brilliant 10" in November 2002. He is a recipient of many other honours related to the field of mathematics. Fields Medal (2014), Infosys Prize (2012), Fermat Prize (2011), Cole Prize (2008), Clay Research Award (2005), SASTRA Ramanujan Prize (2005), Blumenthal Award (2005), Hasse Prize (2003), Morgan Prize (1996), Hoopes Prize (1996) and Hertz Fellowship (1996) are major honours received by this talented mathematician.
