Kantilal Hastimal Sancheti Biography

Kantilal Hastimal Sancheti is an orthopedic physician who invented India's first indigenous knee implant, the Indus Knee. The man behind Sancheti Healthcare Academy, it’s Maharashtra's first orthopaedic dedicated specialty hospital. He currently serves as Professor Emeritus in Orthopaedics, Chief Orthopaedic Surgeon, Sancheti Hospital & Centre for Joint Replacement Surgery, Pune. For his outstanding contributions to the field of medicine and science, government of India honoured him with the second highest civilian award Padma Vibhushan in the year 2012. Known for his social work too, he organized over 500 health camps for handicapped children all over India.

 

Kantilal H. Sancheti was born on 24 July 1936 in a Shewtamber Jain family. He took advanced studies at F.R.C.S (Edinburgh) U.K, followed by Ph.D (Ortho), F.I.C.S. After studies he returned to India, where worked as faculty for many years before starting Sancheti Institute for Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation. He is the Founder Director and Chief Orthopaedic Surgeon of the hospital, which is now listed among the best three Orthopaedic Hospitals of Asia. He serves as Orthopaedic Surgeon to the Governor of Maharashtra and Indian Armed Forces and a member of several high level core committees of various universities related to Health Care.

 

He is Pune’s first Orthopedic specialist. It was his dream to build a hospital exclusively for Orthopedic treatment, and he fulfilled his dream in the year 1972 when he started Sancheti Institute for Orthopaedics (SIOR). He strived hard, and also gave emphasis on humanity and passion, and built the institute to a great organization. His invention of the indigenous implants “Indus Knee and Indus hip” help many arthritic patients to move around without pain.
