Kannan Soundararajan Biography

Kannan Soundararajan is an Indian mathematician who hails from Chennai, Tamil Nadu. As a mathematician, he is concentrated on to the field of analytic number theory, particularly in the subfields of automorphic L-functions, and multiplicative number theory. He is a recipient of numerous prestigious awards in the field of mathematics such as Ostrowski Prize (2011), Infosys Prize (2011), SASTRA Ramanujan Prize (2005), Salem Prize (2003) and Morgan Prize (1995). He represented India at the International Mathematical Olympiad in 1991 and also won a Silver Medal. In 2005, he won the $10,000 SASTRA Ramanujan Prize, shared with Manjul Bhargava, an US mathematician of Indian origin.

 

Kannan Soundararajan hails from Chennai, Tamil Nadu. His younger days were spent in his hometown where he completed his school and college days. Later he moved to US. He currently resides in Palo Alto, California with his family. He has one son. Soundararajan joined the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1991 for undergraduate studies. He completed his graduation in 1995. As a mathematician his first recognition came in the year 1995 when he won the prestigious Morgan prize, an annual award given to an undergraduate student in the US, Canada who demonstrates superior mathematics research. He won the award in the final year at his college. His work in analytic number theory earned him the prize.

 

After studies he worked as a professor for a while, and then joined Princeton University in 1995 to complete his PhD. He completed it under the guidance of Professor Peter Sarnak and received the first five-year fellowship from the American Institute of Mathematics. After that he held many senior positions as an academician. He currently serves as Director of the Mathematics Research Center (MRC) at Stanford.
