K. G. Ramanathan Biography 
K. G. Ramanathan was a famous Indian mathematician who hailed from Hyderabad of present day Telangana. For his overall contributions towards the field of mathematics, government of India honoured him with Padma Bhushan. He was a recipient of the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award for the year 1965 and many other honours during his lifetime. A great teacher too, famous mathematicians, C. P. Ramanujam and Kanakanahalli Ramachandra were his students. Ramanathan was a Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy and Honorary fellow of TIFR. He also published many research books related to the field of mathematics.
K. G. Ramanathan was born on 13 November 1920 in Hyderabad in British India. Kollagunta Gopal Iyer and Ananthalaxmi were his parents. He had two siblings. He lost his mother during his childhood. He married Jayalakshmi Ramanathan and the couple had two sons. After doing his graduation and PG from Osmania University and the University of Madras, he did his PhD from Princeton University under Emil Artin, eminent mathematician. Famous scientist Albert Einstein was his neighbour during his days at Princeton University. He also maintained a relationship with him, and used to render Thyagaraja’s Carnatic renditions for him.
Once return to India in 1951 he joined Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, where he continued with his research works. He built up the number theory group of young mathematicians from India. It’s regarded as one of his contributions during his association with TIFR. He retired from TIFR in 1985. He was deeply interested in studying many works of Ramanujan, both published and unpublished ones, and has published one work on Ramanujan’s continued fraction.
