C. R. Rao Biography

Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao, better known as C. R. Rao is an American mathematician of Indian origin, and also a statistician. He currently serves as the professor emeritus at Pennsylvania State University and Research Professor at the University at Buffalo. He is currently settled in US. Cramér–Rao bound, Rao–Blackwell theorem, Orthogonal arrays and Score test are among his major contributions to the world of mathematics and statistics.  

 

In 1988, The Times of India listed Rao as one of the top 10 Indian scientists of all time. The list also includes Nobel Laureates, C.V. Raman and H. Khorana, and many other leading Indian scientists of all time. An institute has been named after him. Padma Vibhushan, National Medal of Science in 2001, S. S. Bhatnagar Prize and Guy Medal are the major honours received by this great mathematician of present times.

 

He was born into a Telugu family in Hadagali, Bellary, Karnataka. He was the eighth of 10 siblings of his family. He completed his Master’s in mathematics from Andhra University and Master’s in Statistics from Calcutta University in 1943. In 1948, he obtained a PhD degree at King's College in Cambridge University under R. A. Fisher. After that he started his academic career, teaching at many well-known universities and colleges. An inspirational teacher, he also guided hundreds of students for their research works. Famous Indian mathematicians - Veeravalli S. Varadarajan and S. R. Srinivasa Varadhan completed their doctorate degree under him.

 

He has been associated with Indian Statistical Institute and the Anthropological Museum in Cambridge as a professor, and also served as University Professor at the University of Pittsburgh and Eberly Professor and Chair of Statistics. He served as Director of the Indian Statistical Institute, Jawaharlal Nehru Professor and National Professor in India. He also served as President of the International Statistical Institute, President of International Biometric Society and many more.
