Atul Gurtu Biography 
Atul Gurtu is a leading high energy physicist who has worked under Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai for four decades since 1971. He retired in 2011 as a senior professor from TIFR. In this past four decades he has given some outstanding contributions to the country in particle physics research. He married noted actress Suhasini Mulay in 2011, on his birthday just before retirement, at the age of 65. They came to know about each other through facebook. Suhasini Mulay was 60 then. It’s his second marriage. Famous historian and writer Vijaya Mulay is his mother-in-law.
He was born in Lahore on 16 January 1946. After partition his family moved to India. His schooling was completed in Shimla and later studied at Panjab University. He joined TIFR in 1969, where he spent four decades till his retirement in 2011. A particle physics researcher, this physicist is known for his outstanding contributions in this field and was committed to fostering relations with international laboratories and institutions. He, along with Som Ganguli and several doctoral students played a key role in precision measurement of the properties of the Z boson and the determination of the mass and width of the W boson. Since the mid-1990s, he became a prominent Indian physicist who represented India at CMS experiment at the LHC, becoming the spokesperson of the India-CMS group in 2003.
He became a Facebook friend of 5-time National winning actress Suhasini Mulay, a few months before his retirement. Actually Mulay got attracted to one of his published articles about Atul Gurtu’s first wife, Promila Bawa who died in 2011. Married for long 36 years, Atul through the magazine article quoted how he decided to make her as happy in her last days, when she was detected with cancer. Though the decision quite surprised Mulay’s friends and family, they tied the knot on Gurtu’s 65th birthday. Mulay earlier had a live-in relationship which ended in 1990. Since then she was single.
