Years back, it was a common scenario in Bollywood. Once engaged, actresses finish their left assignments and never accept new projects at all! That’s how actresses make their first preparations towards marriage. It was the normal practice since middle 2000’s when we hear a lot of actresses who left the industry post marriage. Perhaps a few exceptions are Aiswarya Rai, Juhi Chawla, Jaya Bachchan and Shilpa Shetty. Now we hear a lot about comeback of top actresses of 90’s, Madhuri Dixit, Sharmila Tagore, Sri Devi and Karishma Kapoor for instances. Kajol, though not full time engaged in Bollywood, she has been here for a quite long time.

But if we go back to the past, we can find a lot of talented and lovely actresses who have left the film world soon after marriage. Best instances of 90’s are Madhuri Dixit, Sri Devi and Karishma Kapoor for sure, it we search in recent past. Now as they have returned back in bag, let us discuss about a few who left the film world during 70’s and 80’s. How it had been, when Dimple at the age of 16 left film-world before the release of her debut movie, marrying the first superstar of Bollywood, Rajesh Khanna? Perhaps she might not have imagined that time that her yet-to-release movie is to become trendsetter movie of early 70’s. Definitely it was! But she left the industry after her marriage with Rajesh Khanna. When she returned back with Sagar after a decade or so, post the indifferences between her and Rajesh Khanna, already she had lost many valuable years of her film career. Yet she was able to win National awards through Rudali and have powerful performances like Lekin and Dil chahta hai, for which she will be remembered always.

Next face that comes to my mind is none other than Neetu Singh. She was married to Kapoor Khandan when she at her early 20’s. Yet she did so accepting the customs of traditional Kapoor family. Now she appears once in a while along with her husband, Rishi Kapoor and makes remarkable performances as well. Saira Banu was only 22 when she married Dileep Kumar, double of her age. Yet she was happy that she married a man whom she has always dreamt about. Meenakhshi Sheshadri, Twinkle Khanna, Bhagya Shree, Sonali Bandre, Gayathri Joshi and lot more – They have all left the industry saying, “My first preference is of course, family”.  When normal ladies are career oriented and never leave their professions, why are female actresses doing so?
