What's The Impact On DDLJ On Bollywood Since Its Release?

Most recently, the evergreen romantic movie of Indian screen – Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, which we fondly call as ‘DDLJ’ celebrated its 19 long years at Marata Theatre, Mumbai. DDLJ owns the credit of longest running Indian movie and it still runs in full-packed houses on weekend shows. DDLJ set new standards to romantic heroes of Bollywood and till now it is followed. For the same reason, comparisons to Raj of DDLJ is quite common.

What’s so special about that movie? Is it a new theme experimented on Indian silver screen? Not at all! But it presented Indian romance in a new perspective, as a bridge of east and west traditions and value and above all, a happy ending arranged marriage with full approval from families. The running train in the climax of the movie, where Raj carries away his bride is one of the iconic moments of Indian silver screen, which has been spoofed many times later. Many of its dialogues have also been used repeated in other movies and most recently, a new version ‘Humpty Sharma ki Dulhaniya’ was also well received by audience.

Not more to say, we just loved the sizzling chemistry of Raj and Simran on screen and their silent love which they failed to reveal during the parting. Definitely DDLJ is that one particular movie which cemented Shah Rukh Khan as the ‘King of Romance’and ‘Real Badshah’ of Bollywood. Till now Shah Rukh Khan – Kajol pair is one of the hottest pairs of Bollywood, even after 20 years since they paired for the first time in Baazigar in 1993.

DDLJ was released on October 20, 1995 worldwide and was declared an all-time blockbuster within a short period. The movie presented well, some foreign locations, apart from Indian Punjab and its traditional customs. Its dialogues like ‘It's OK Senorita, bade bade desho mein, chhoti chhoti baatein hoti rehti hai’ and ‘Fail hona aur padhai na karna ... hamare khandaan ki parampara hai’ are some of the iconic dialogues of the movie. It has been a habit for Bollywood fans since then, to compare each and every romantic movie to DDLJ. But honestly, except a few movies like Karan Johar’s Kuch kuch hota hai (1998), none of the romantic movies have been able to reach the cult classic status reached by DDLJ, even Shah Rukh starrer movies! Let us celebrate 19th birthday of this sweet romantic movie and no doubt, it will definitely complete 2 decades next October.
