The Heights Reached By A. R. Rahman

 

A. R. Rahman is a gifted musician with inborn talents and the whole of India is proud of him and his talents. He has millions of fans all over India and abroad. His music has worldwide welcome that more than 150 million copies were sold to date including over a hundred film tracks. His performance in some notable films like Roja, Jodha Akbar, Slumdog Millionaire and Bombay has taken him to great heights. He started composing music for television features from his younger days.

 

After completing his degree in western classical music from the Trinity College of Music in London, he set up his in-house studio, Panchathan Record Inn at Chennai. He was given a chance by Mani Ratnam to make scores for the film Roja in 1991, which is considered to be one of his best pieces of music even now. This exposed him to the outside world and got many chances after that. Time Magazine has listed this in the top 10 best movie tracks in the world. He proved to be successful through his intelligent piece of music and received the National Award for best music composer. This was the first time in the history of India, the award to be given to a debutant musician. He has won this award four times totally which is enough to prove his talent to the world.

 

Sony music hired him to record music for the song Vande Mataram in 1997 as an initiative to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Indian independence. This album created the sense of patriotism among the people of India. Andrew Lloyd Webber asked him to compose music for the film Bombay Dreams which was staged at London for two years continuously. The Guardian in UK has listed the sound track of the film to be one among the thousand albums that one should listen before his death.

 

He received global acclaim for his work in Slumdog Millionaire. This got him two Oscar awards one for the best song and the other for the best music. This film won totally 8 Oscar awards and the two went to A. R. Rahman. His score in the film won him 15 more awards including the Grammy awards in two categories. He has earned more than 25 Filmfare awards so far. The government of India recognized his talents by offering him Padma Bhushan award and Padma Shri award. He also has received doctorate degree from many universities, the notable among them being those received from the Trinity College of Music in London where he studied and Anna University. He took place in the hundred most influential people by the Time Magazine in the year 2009.

 

He embraced Islam, the religion of his mother in 1989. He is also a philanthropist having interest in various charity works. He started A. R. Rahman foundation to help the economically lower and underprivileged children. The income from the song, Pray For Me Brother in English was given to this foundation. With his help and support, KM Music Conservatory was established in 2008 to train the aspiring talents in music. This offers beginner courses and diploma level courses. His contribution to the Tamil film industry is incredible that A. R. Rahman photos and A. R. Rahman videos are hailed by the Tamil people very much.
