Mani Ratnam Biography

Mani Ratnam is an Indian film producer, director and screen writer. He is directing films since the year 1983. He marked his entrance as a director through the film Pallavi Anu Pallavi. He evolved to be one of the most successful directors of South India.

 

He was born on 2nd June 1956 in Madras in Tamil Nadu. His birth name was Gopala Ratnam Subramaniam Iyer. His father was Ratnam Iyer. He was also a film producer and owned the company Venus Pictures.

 

Mani Ratnam studied at Vidhya Mandir Senior Secondary School in Chennai. He then joined Vivekananda College and obtained his graduation in Commerce. He also got MBA degree from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies. He started his career as a management consultant. His brother G. Venkateswaran brought him into the film industry.

 

He married actress Suhasini in 1988 and has a son named Nandhan. He and his brother G. Srinivasan jointly founded the film production company Madras Talkies. The films of his early days, Mouna Raagam, Naayagan and Agni Natchathiram were highly successful. His film Roja was a mega hit and was nominated for the Golden St. George Award at the Moscow International Film Festival.

 

His film Bombay won many awards like Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration, Special Award from the Political Film Society, Gala Award at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, etc. He includes real life events in his films.

 

Some of his films include Yuva, Kannaththil Muthamittaal, Guru, Raavanan, Iruvar, Aasai, Bombay, Nerukku Ner, Alaipayuthey, Dum Dum Dum, Dil Se, Thiruda Thiruda, Anjali, Chatriyan, Agni Natchathiram, Naayagan, etc.

 

He has won National Film Awards many times, Filmfare Awards four times, international film festival awards twelve times and South Filmfare Awards four times. His films Mouna Raagam, Anjali, Kannathil Muthamittaal won National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil. He got International film awards for his films Bombay, Iruvar and Kannathil Muthamittaal. He received Jaeger-Lecoultre Glory to the Filmmaker in 2010 at the 67th Venice International Film Festival.
