The Genius Named Abdul Kalam Azad

 

Abdul Kalam Azad – Freedom fighter of India who played a significant role in Indian struggle for independence. This political leader was a politician, poet, philosopher and religious pandit. He had a unique personality and he was one among those who desired India not to break into two parts. He believed that Muslims will grow strong only in united India, than in partitioned Pakistan. He was the Minister of Education since Indian independence and Indian government honoured him with Bharat Ratna posthumously in the year 1992. Earlier he was given once, but declined saying he should not given the award as he was in the selection committee.

 

He was born in 1888 November 11. He was born in Kolkata, later gone to Mecca; but again returned back to Kolkata. He completed his studies in India. When he was at Mecca he started his religious learning from Pandits of Mecca and Medina. He was interested in poems too and accepted the pen name, ‘Swathanthran’ for his writing. When he reached 15, he had completed a huge collection of ghazals. When he was just 12, he started writing in magazines – Nayi Rangi and Aalam. Thus during his age in teens, he earned the name of a poet and philosopher.

 

He was interested in astrology and chemistry and deeply learnt about them too. Later he became well known as a journalist and translator. When he was 15 only, he started writing to enlighten the knowledge of his Muslim community. Through his writings he declared that Muslims are a part of Indian community and their rise and down fall are directly linked to India and Indian culture and constitution. Whole throughout his life, he preached the principles of Hindu-Muslim unity. Nehru has mentioned about the influence of Azad’s writings in his great work, Discovery of India. During the time of freedom struggle, he found enough time to translate holy Quran.

 

He entered non-co operative movement of India in the year 1927 and had gone to jail several times. Gandhiji found a great leader of India in Abdul Kalam Azad. He was one among those great leaders of India who inspired Indians to forget the diversity of caste and creed and fight together for Indian independence. Once India got independence, he framed the principles of education for our country. He gave preference to literature and art, with other subjects. He left us in the year 1958.
