The American College, Madurai

The American College, an autonomous institution is located in Madurai. It is affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University. In 1881, this college was started by American Christian Missionaries. We can see many architectural wonders inside this college amidst natural surroundings. Usually, the temperature inside the campus will be very low comparing outside. It is because of the structure of the buildings i.e high roof, proper ventilation system such as window and doors.

This is campus is perfectly designed in such a way that a person who gets into the campus first time will get confused where he is. Most of the buildings are red brick buildings which look like Madras High Court. Most of these buildings were designed by Henry Irwin, British Architect who designed Madras High Court. This college has its motto in Latin 'Purificatus non consumptus' which means Purified, Not consumed in English.

Here the syllabus followed is based on CBCS - Choice Based Credit System which makes its students gain knowledge in other fields from their main stream. As the world is really changing fast and demands are increasing, Satellite Campus for this college is located at Chattirapatti, Madurai. This college brings out the extra-curricular activity of each student by giving them relevant opportunities and enriches their skills. Besides, it provides soft skills workshops and arranges campus interviews.

Madurai is proud to have this college there. This college provides proper freedom to its students so that they are utilizing it in efficient manner. This college is well known for its tradition, decorum and functions and festivals. Candle Lighting Ceremony is the major highlight of this college. Every year, there will be a Candle Lighting Ceremony at Main hall for final year UG & PG Students. For every alumni of The American College, the Candle lighting Ceremony will be the most memorable moment in his/her life.

This college voluntarily assists the students who are financially weak. Besides government scholarship, this college provides scholarship to support the education of poor students especially from rural areas. It has been serving the society since 1881. We can find the alumni of this college all over the world (in all the fields too). Solomon Pappaiah, Actor Vivek, Director Bala and Director & Actor (Karu. Pazhanippan) are the few of the alumni of this college.
