Snake In My House

A five feet long snake sneaked into my kitchen. At about midnight 1 ‘O clock, my husband spotted a tail wagging in the darkness and started shouting. I peeped into the darkness but was afraid to go into the room. My husband went to take a long pole and a stick. In the meantime I could see the object wriggling to the right side and getting into the corner and taking refuge amidst the onion baskets.

“I would not go inside” said my husband. The light was switched off and I dared to go and switch on the light. We did not want to do any harm to it and so we opened the backyard door so that it could sneak out when we threaten it. But who will go inside the kitchen? Certainly he was not ready. I braved the circumstance though my heart was pounding fast. I went in and climbed on the shelf and sat on it with the pole in my hand with my legs propped up on the kitchen sink and bearing a torch light on the other hand.

He stood outside the kitchen entrance on the chair. I could see the tail behind the chappathi maker. I hit the wooden chappathi maker with the pole and now I heard the hissing sound. After a while I understood I had to remove all the things from that place. With the pole, I dragged the onion basket and other buckets in that corner outside one by one. The torch could show the snake now. It is a king cobra about five feet long as big as we see in zoo. With an opened hood it was sticking out its tongue ready to sting its enemy.

I could have easily hit that but did not want to do so. After struggling with it for nearly half an hour, it came outside and went into the next shelf under the kitchen basket. It started to hiss with a loud noise which frightened me. My husband was still standing on the chair safely waiting for it to come outside. With some effort, I could bring it out but before I could balance the pole to drive it outside, it went under the refrigerator. Again the headache started for us. Now it is in the left side and so I have to climb down from my haven and come to the opposite side. I climbed and sat near the stove just opposite the refrigerator which is near the kitchen entrance.

I could not send the pole below the fridge and so was making futile attempts. I could only hear it hissing with anger but could not see it. What shall we do now? My husband poured a bucket full of water under the fridge. It made it difficult to crawl. We were pretty sure we could not drive it out but only choice left was to beat it to death.

It came to the left side near the wall. Suddenly my husband could insert the pole and strike it. The stomach of the snake was caught between the pole and the wall and it could not move now. With the stick in my hand, I started striking it. The head turned towards the stick and it started to bite the stick with rage. A hard blow again. The sound stopped and we assumed it was dead. I took the camera and photographed it. But again, it came alive and turned towards us.

I got hold of the pole and my husband got some courage to move the refrigerator now. The shiny skin was gleaming in the half light. We did not have good weapon to hit it and so was trying with the stick. After struggling for another half an hour, blood oozed out of its head. I turned my face aside not able to withstand that gory horror.

When we made sure that the object was no more alive, he took it on the pole and marched towards the gate to throw it out like a soldier victorious from the battlefield. I was all in sweats after this long struggle. We actually wanted to drive it out safely but the snake was adamant and lost its life. Sometimes what we think as haven turns out to be the hell.
