The concretization of roads in Mangalore began as a way to develop the small city and improve the bad conditions of the roads. The roads changed from two way to one way roads. Buildings were demolished, trees cut etc in a bid to widen the roads and increase the convenience level of people. Nobody said a word because they believed that it was for their own good.
Unfortunately due to the haphazard construction of these concrete roads the people are facing a lot of problems. One such story is the stretch between Byndore to Kankanady. The footpaths that were once present are no more there. The people are forced to walk on the roads. As it is a busy road there is a high risk of accidents. The school children find it very difficult to walk on these roads. The dividers are overgrown with grass making crossing difficult. That is not all. The concretization has heightened the roads leading to flooding inside the residential compounds. The rain drains have totally disappeared.
The shopkeepers in Kankanady have their own stories to tell. The flooding of these roads due to missing drains causes a lot of problems. They customers are forced to wade in ankle deep water during the rains. This is many way discourages them from visiting these shops during the rains. An interview with the owner of Crasta Bakery in Kankanady reveals that all the shopkeepers of that area have filed a written complaint to the corporation authorities. The complaint was just brushed away and not attended to. Later this was put up in the local news channel and newspaper after which the authorities dug a small hole for the water. This did not help either. On filing a second complaint the reason given by the corporation authorities was that it would come in the way of the new building coming up in that area. The people have given up hope of seeing any improvement. The problems are never ending. It is not just this area but also other areas that are facing similar problems due to concretization of roads. Steps should be taken to tackle these problems as early as possible.
