“Yeh duniya ek dulhan…… Yeh mera India, I love my India” – This particular song of Subhash Ghai’s Pardes was sung by Kavitha Krishnamurthy and was released during golden jubilee celebrations of our independence day. Let me mention one more patriotic song that was released exactly the same year at the same eve. “Sandese aate hai” of the movie Border was the top song of the year 1997. The song was sung by Sonu Nigam and Roop Kumar Rathod and still remembered for the dedication of Indian army to our country. Through this column let me mention a few more songs of Bollywood that are remembered most during our Independence Day.

“Har karam apna karenge…” of the movie Karma. Again, this song is also a part of Subhash ghai’s home production and sung by Kavitha Krishnamurthy herself. This movie song was pictured on Nutan and it was always shown in Doordarshan Chitrahaar and Rangoli during late 80’s and early 90’s, at the eve of Independence Day and Republic day.

Song list is incomplete without Manoj Kumar songs. Manoj Kumar-Mahendra Kapoor combination has given some amazing patriotic songs to Bollywood of which a few need special mention. Ab ke baras of Kranthi, Yeh desh ki darthi of Upkaar, Dulhan chale and Hai preet jahan ki of Purab aur paschim need special mention.

Now let us go to the black and white era of Bollywood to pick up a few precious gems. Aao bacho tumhe sikhadoon and De Di Hume azadi, bina khadig bina dhal of Jagruti, Tu Hindu banega na musalmaan banega of Dhool ka phool, Mere rang de basanthi and Aye Watan, aye watan of Shaheed and Vanthe Matharam of Anand Math.

Moving to the era of 60’s, Insaf ki dagar pe, bachchon dikhao chalke of Ganga Jamuna, Aye mere pyare watan, aye mere bichchde chaman of Kabuliwalah, Apni azadi ko hum hargiz mita sakte nahin of Leader and Kar chale hum bhida of Haqueeqat are still remembered by billions.

Now it seems patriotic songs are not widely used in Bollywood movies. Songs of a series of Bhagath Singh movies during early 2000’s, post Lagaan need special mention. Title song of Swades is one such memorable song, a patriotic movie done by Ashuthosh Gowarikar followed by yet another story of India before independence – Lagaan. Yes, patriotic songs are slowly fading from Bollywood and today or tomorrow, they may disappear completely.
