Mughal Art

The Mughal art flourished during the time of Mughals and this reflects the Indo-Islamic-Persian style. The Mughals ruled over India from 1526 to 1857 and the Delhi sultanate was established in 1192 AD. Since then the Mughal art was very famous. Paintings were popular way of expressing the artistic tastes during the time of Mughals. There were many Mughal school of paintings and the most fantastic artwork are the Padshanamth and Kandan i Timura.

In the Mughal art, usually the court scenes with the emperors and the nobles are portrayed. During the reign of Akbar, many artists were adorning his court. The artwork reached its zenith under Akbar and many of these artists were Hindus. This shows the cosmopolitan culture of Akbar and many portraits, miniature paintings and wall paintings were made. He encouraged the artists to come up with the wonderful piece of Mughal art. He paid the artists well and promoted the art and architecture.

The Mughal art started to decline during the rule of Jehangir and Shah Jahan. During the rule of Jahangir, there were many artists like Bishan Das, Mahohar, Abul Hasan, Daulath and Govarthan. He had the ability to recognize the work of any painter. When he was succeeded by Shah Jahan in the year 1628, he took more interest in architecture. Taj Mahal stands as a fine example of his architectural interest. He built many buildings with red sandstone including the Red Fort. Mughal art flourished under his rule and he gave more importance to paintings with court scenes.

When Aurangazeb became the ruler in 1658 after Shah Jahan, he did not patronize the artists. Though he undertook some architectural projects like Pearl Mosque he banned painting. The artists had to find new work. In the later part of Mughal rule the Mughals were at the mercy of the British and so they could not contribute much to the art and architecture.

The Mughal art could be seen in the places like Bikaner, Bundi and Kota and in other places like Lucknow, Faizabad and Farukabad. The Mughal paintings are influenced both by the Persian painting and by the Indian Hindu, Jain and Buddhist culture. So it emerged as a blend of all these. The famous paintings of Humayun based on the Persian miniature painting, Princes of the House of Timur is still in the British Museum. When he came back to India, two artists Sayyid Ali and Absussamad accompanied him and they started many workshops in India.

The Mughal art during the time of Jahangir had the portraits of King and Queen. He came under the influence of the British and he had sent them many oil paintings as a gift. He encouraged the artists to paint the events of his own life. The Jahangirnama had many paintings in it and some of them are very uncommon. Even today the Mughal art style is practiced by many artists in Rajasthan. Some of them are talented copies of the original Mughal paintings and some of them use only the style of Mughal art in their modern works.
