Manipal University (MU) is a name to be reckoned with, not only in India but world over. Started in 1953 with Kasturba Medical College – its flagship college – MU today has over 24 professional institutes offering graduation and post graduation programs in medicine, engineering, communication, management and humanities. MU is now home to over 16, 000 students pursuing diverse courses in Manipal.

Manipal Institute of Communication (MIC) is a constituent college of Manipal University that was established in 1997. Over the last decade and a half, MIC has emerged as one of the leading communication colleges with international reputation in India, offering media and journalism courses. It is also ranked among the top five Communication Colleges in India.

Indian cinema has an identity that is very unique and unmatched. We have moved from the black and white silent films to 3D, but our cinema continues to retain its basic essence - to entertain. The French might have introduced the concept of moving images, but little did anyone know that India would one day become the largest film industry in the world. It's a miracle that Indian cinema has withstood the test of time despite the vast cultural differences in the past 100 years. Indian cinema, despite all its peculiarities, has been a reflection of the socio-economic, political and cultural changes that took place in the country.

"Manipal Film Festival" will celebrate the 100 years of Indian Cinema by showcasing films made by some of the finest filmmakers India has witnessed. Right from Adoor Gopalakrishnan to Mira Nair and a score of filmmakers in between. Each decade has had its own set of inspiring filmmakers who have been instrumental in influencing the course of Indian cinema altogether. A lot has changed since the time the first feature film, 'Raja Harish Chandra' was released in Mumbai in 1913. Movies in have evolved further into what they are today. Over the span of three days film festival, we aim to screen nine movies that have redefined our conventional belief systems. All these movies have been acclaimed and celebrated for their ability to engage the audiences in ways that is hard to replicate.
