Killer Roads Of India

We hear about road accidents every day. Some are caused by reckless driving and some due to other inane factors like lack of proper maintenance of roads as well as vehicles and some are caused because of traffic congestions. The reasons for the accidents are many.

India over the years has emerged as the “world’s road death capital” with fatalities skyrocketing by 40% in the last 5 years. 13 people die every hour in Indian roads, with Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra topping the list. 1, 14,860 people died in road accidents in the year 2007 alone. China which is way more populated than India comes second.

According to police officials, 80% of the road accidents are due to the ignorance and negligence of traffic rules by the drivers. 70% of road accidents are caused by youngsters between the age of 15 and 22. With the emergence of the latest technology these days the youngsters get swanky new cars and sports bikes and they often use them without having proper documents like license and registration. It is painful to say that the transport department of India is one of the most corrupt departments in India. In 80% of negligent road accidents 30% are fatal because most of the commuters don’t wear helmets or wear seat belts.

In India road rules are treated as “best practices” rather than being customary. The punishment for disobeying the rules have to be severe but it is not. Have we thought of people who lose their loved ones in accidents? Not many think about the pain they suffer. India loses 20 Billion rupees due to road accidents annually, which the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates is enough to feed 50% of the nation’s malnourished children. We must realize that our mere carelessness can bring tragedies to other families and sometimes destroy them. There is only one life and one needs to live it productively and to the fullest rather than give an abrupt ending to it just because we were too lazy or too careless to follow rules. So I want to emphasize that we must drive slowly and carefully and follow all the traffic rules.
