Inglourious Basterds

This was the most recent movie directed by Quentin Tarantino and it was released in 2009. This was very unlike his previous movies like Kill Bill, pulp fiction, reservoir dogs, etc. but it is known as one of his best even though it is far from being a perfect movie.

The movie opens with Colonel Hans Landa interrogating a family of French citizens under the suspicion of hiding Jews in their basement, played with a psychopathic veneer by the German actor Christopher Waltz who went on to win an Oscar for his portrayal of a seemingly friendly but sadistic from the inside German colonel whose job is to hunt down the Jews in Nazi Germany under Adolf Hitler. Even Adolf Hitler makes an appearance in the movie and surprisingly provides comic relief. Only Tarantino could come up with something like that. But the main character of the movie is played by Brad Pitt with an impeccably learnt southern accent who leads group of soldiers whose only aim is “killing Nazis” as told by their leader. This group comprises of an assortment of characters like The Bear Jew who clubs people until their heads cave in with a baseball bat.

The story takes some brilliant turns and literally plays around with the characters. There are some scenes in which the tension builds up to insane levels and these scenes are underscored with the perfect music for which the director is famous for. Even the script is brilliant with its witty dialogue and characterization. The director once again steals the show with his astute camera work and he deserves an Oscar for creating a canvas of violence, greed, murder, torture and revenge. These themes are almost always present in a Tarantino movie. He seems to be an expert in mashing up different things and letting it all play out the way he wants. The problem many critics found with this movie had to do with the fact that it has many historical inaccuracies but since it is Tarantino I think it is safe to assume that it was done deliberately as is his style. The movie promises a fun, rollicking time if you have the stomach for nail biting suspense and full frontal violence along with an attraction to intelligent dialogue.
