Along with shortage of power in various parts of India at the moment, the scarcity of water is adding to the problems. Summers are the most difficult of these times. But what if anyone tells you that there is water beneath the earth that would suffice billons of people – literally?

Well, looks like a fairytale, isn’t it? But, that’s true. The scientists and researchers in University of New Mexico and Northwestern University have successfully found huge reservoirs of water underneath our planet – under North America to be specific. This indicates the presence of unbelievable amounts of water under the earth.

This humongous pool of water is roughly 640 kms beneath where we presently are.

But, as exciting is the news of this find, so is about the water itself. We all know that water can be found in three forms – liquid, ice and vapor. However, the newest discovery of the water is a bit strange. The water is in fact, locked in the molecular structure of the minerals in mantle rock.

There have been studies earlier that claimed that there could be water trapped in the rock layer of the mantle of the earth, which is situated between the lower and upper mantles. This discovery means the water from the face of the earth can go down to such greater depths.

Steve Jacobsen, who is a geophysicist at Northwestern University along with University of New Mexico’s seismologist Brandon Schmandt have been successful in providing straight proof that water may exist in the mantle. In the regional scale, mantle is also called as ‘transition zone’.

It was discovered earlier this year when a diamond, which was brought out from this 640 km depth, due to volcano in Brazil. A miniature portion of ringwoodite in the blue color carried this latest finding – the presence of water. The water was bound in the mineral in a solid state.

This particular finding was also recently published in ‘Science’. No doubt, it will be a great help to the other scientists and help them study the formation of the earth in an even better way.

It now remains to be seen how this water can be used for the welfare of the mankind today.
