Happy New Year Movie Is Not Exciting!

‘Happy New Year’ collected 44.98 crore Indian rupees in the opening day of release and I too was one among those, who watched the movie the same day. Since the blockbuster hit of Chennai Express in 2013, speculations are many and many film lovers wanted to see this sizzling pair once again on big screen. When the movie is directed by none other than Farah Khan, who brought Deepika Padukone-Shah Rukh Khan together for the first time onscreen through Om Shanti Om, expectations are really high. Is this Diwali release worth your money?

If you are aiming at mere entertainment, then it is OK. But if you are a person who wants to see something new or surprising twists in the film script, it would be a bit disappointing to you. In short, the movie is a mix-mix of all types of Bollywood masalas from comedy to dance, revenge saga to patriotism and colourful sets to beautiful foreign locations; some melodrama also. You can also see your favourite stars entertaining you. But the real problem is – the movie has a very loose script and at not even a single moment, the movie keeps us engaging, though the story is about a revenge and bank robbery. Everything is as expected. It seems Farah Khan tried to weave several plots together with a single thread.

Most recently I watched the big Onam release – Malayalam movie, ‘Sapthamashree Thaskaraha’ the story which revolves around 7 thieves and revenge. Surprisingly both the plots look almost the same – a story of revenge and robbery of safe locker. It was a huge hit across Kerala and the movie kept viewers engaged from the first scene to last scene. If I compare ‘Happy New Year’ to ‘Sapthamashree Thaskaraha’, the weak diamond robbery plot of ‘Happy new year’ makes me bit disappointed.

In a Shah Rukh Khan movie, all other actors have fewer roles to execute. The whole movie rests on 8-packs and powerful shoulders of King Khan. Yet Boman Irani, who played the role of Tammy caught my attention quickly. He is a genius. Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood and Vivaan Shah also played their roles beautifully. I felt that Deepika’s real talent was not exploited fully. Despite being an amazing actress in the present times who worked in many meaty roles in the recent times, Deepika has been sidelined with some song sequences and dance performances with short dresses. I expected a little more. But the film script gave her only little space to exhibit her versatality. In the last two releases with Shah Rukh, Om Shanti Om and Chennai Express, she shared more screen space with Shah Rukh and of course, memorable performance as well. In this movie, not enough stress has been given to romance and I liked this idea, as this movie is about revenge and diamond robbery.

If you are expecting a good weekend, a simple movie which gives you some laughs and light moments, Happy New Year is the best choice this Diwali season. But if you are expecting some power packed performances and some thrilling moments, then this movie is not for you. For the entertainment package, humour presented by the supporting crew and a few light moments, I give 3out of 5 stars for this movie.
