There was a day when we were ruled directly by the external forces and no less than the same scenes today, India faces a similar situation with the Foreign Direct Investment [FDI] unleashing its powerful ideas for retail business and trade in the country. What came as the Union Government’s decision earlier in September conditionally permitting FDI in multi-brand retail trading was not just a mere game changer. It was an impulsive blow on the existing retail traders in the country. Not just that, it also affects a series of other issues ranging from employment, benefits and risks, the closure of national retail chains in the business, etc. A bird’s view on the immediate concerning issues is very important to understand why, how and if FDI is a boon or a bane to the country.
What we are looking at is a paradigm shift of business and power in politics between the ruling power and the Opposition. It has created undulated oscillation the political equations and the scenes are changing every day. BJP argues that when NDA was in power, the Congress had opposed to the FDI in retail branding whereas now, it seems to have double standards going forward with respect to the retail segment. It is seen that the politics have more impact on any decision made for the benefit of the country than looking at other reformative measures in Economy and GDP.
Considering China, its growth model is shored up by its exports whereas in India, the growth is evidently reliant on domestic demand. Where more than 70% of the products sold in Wal-mart are from China, it has largely inclined to the US trade deficits in China. It is very conspicuous and understood that if an external market player makes an entree into the Indian retail business, the existing traders will have to see the doom’s day. As given by the McKinsey Report, India’s $250 billion retail business is the eighth largest in the world and had the potential to elevate by 7 percent in 2011. Now this comes as a surging opportunity for the US to pave way for its yet another outside border business.
