Every one of us is familiar with adventurous ship journey of Charles Darwin that unfolded many mysteries behind human evolution. He brought in front, many important details regarding human evolution and different paths travelled by man to reach as we are now. Through this column I would like to briefly sketch a few of such important details.

From ancient time itself, there were thoughts regarding human evolution. Yet it was Charles Darwin who provided scientific basement for such realistic thoughts for the first time. He published ‘Origin of species’ in the year 1859 that broke many myths that existed in the society. He searched and brought out proofs from the animal species of Galapagos Island to prove that what he told is true.

Human evolution has travelled through many chains - before 4.4 million years from RD to present man, it has witnessed several changes. Present man, named Homo sapiens evolved before 2 lakh years. The oldest complete human skeleton obtained has dated 1.5 million years. According to Darwin’s theory, living organisms respond to environmental changes by bringing changes to their behavior or structural changes in genes. Those organisms only sustain in the new environment that can cope up with the new changes. This was termed as ‘Survival of the fittest’. Darwin’s theory also emphasizes on the fact that all living organisms have a common ancestor. Evolution doesn’t happen in one day or two. It’s a slow process that takes centuries and millenniums to reach the next phase. Fossils of different ages that have obtained from earth’s surface and rocks have provided solid evidence behind human evolution.  

Now a few interesting facts

It’s clearly proved that dinosaurs ruled earth before men came into existence. As a part of evolution, they changed to different species and a few disappeared from earth’s surface forever. One of those changed species began to fly and they became birds!

Ida – a beautiful and complete fossil was obtained in the year 1983. It has been dated to 47 million years and regarded as the main link between man and other mammals.

Humans are not evolved from monks. But both have common ancestor – that’s what studies have proved. This splitting happened around 7 million years ago.
