Corruption In India

Corruption has become the latest trend in global politics. In India it has become a habit and a practice strictly followed by the politicians and the bureaucracy. In fact nowadays politics is synonymous with corruption. This is why we see a gap that is widening between the poor and the rich.

It is not easy to define corruption in a narrow sense but it is mostly concerned with bribery, under hand dealings and other forms which also include nationwide scams. In India, corruption leads to promotion instead of prison. There are many causes for corruption, the most common ones being the greedy and power hungry nature of the politicians, vast size of our population and the wide spread illiteracy along with poor infrastructure, the complete lack of public outcry and the absence of a strong public forum to oppose corruption. The low salaries of the government officials are some of the other reasons.

People have lost faith in modern day politics. As of March 2010, 157 of India’s 522 parliamentarians were facing criminal charges. Many of the biggest scams like the 2G spectrum scam, 2010 CWG scam and the Adarsh Housing Society scam have involved high profile ministers. The year 2011 had proved to be a watershed in the public tolerance of corruption in India with widespread public protests and movements led by social activists like Anna Hazare. The question that comes to everyone’s mind is whether we can contain and reduce corruption in our society and the answer is yes. Corruption is just like diabetes, it can only be contained, not eliminated. Honest and dedicated persons in public life are the most suitable prescription for containing it.

It is time for the people to start paying attention to these issues and understand that we must fight corruption. The corrupt must suffer the consequences incurred by their actions, and should be punished. The change should come from within us, if we are willing to step up to the cause. It is all about making sacrifices and taking initiatives. We have suffered a lot and tolerated it a lot and now it is time to eradicate it completely.
