Wood – one among the most expensive part in the construction of homes and offices. Now trees have been reduced considerably asking people to search other alternatives for their designs. Though not as popular as wood, we have seen wood replaced with its substitutes in the recent time. So, through this article let me give you a brief summary of those items than can be used for doors, windows and shelves instead of wood, reducing total budget of your construction. Though it’s better to use wooden doors and windows for your front and back doors and windows, you can go for alternatives for the rest wooden architecture, if you have shortage of time and money to make them available.

Now steel and glass is more popular, particularly in contemporary homes. Glass allows a lot of sunlight to get inside your home, reduces the expenses of construction of walls using bricks and cement as well. Not only walls, windows and doors can be constructed using glass. For more strength you can give steel bars as well.

Steel doors, though not as beautiful as wooden doors are more durable and cheap. They give enough strength to protect your home from theft as well. Steel-glass combination for interior is the latest trend.  

Veneer and treated wood are best substitutes for doors and windows. Both are processed woods, resemble normal doors and are cheap as well. You can try plywood as well. Plywood is best suited to make cabinets for kitchen and shelves for your storage. It is available in two types – marine and commercial. When waste parts of wood are converted to pulp and processed later adding resin and wax, it gives a new type of wooden substitute known as MDF. Now ready made MDF doors, windows and cabinets are available in market, ready to fix.

Similar to MDF is HDF. In both cases, high pressure and temperature are used for its manufacturing and it can be used for flooring as well as doors for your interior. PVC is best for bathroom doors as it’s water proof and durable.

Before I conclude, let me mention a few more substitutes. UPVC, Bison board, fiber, toughened glass, particle board and aluminum – choose the best that suits your budget too!
