Can Marriage Give An End Knot To Heroines' Career?

Earlier it was a time when married heroines are outdated products of cinema and marketing field. When a heroine leaves the industry, she leaves it forever. Re-entry can happen only in the form of supporting actress, sister or mother roles. Such things were common happenings of Bollywood till the middle half of last decade or so. But when Kajol came back with the success of Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum after her marriage, it was something like rewriting of an already pre-decided script. Yes, similar to Hollywood things are taking a new curve in Bollywood too.

Earlier 25 was the maximum age of a heroine; she can’t even imagine getting a meaty role as heroine once she has passed 30. But this concept was just opposite in the case of heroes. Even at the age of 50+, heroes romance onscreen with heroines below 20 or 22 years old. But now, in the recent times, how many successful pairings have we seen where heroes are paired with heroines older than them! In most cases, such pairings clicked too. Also, heroines reach their peak of their career once they reach 28 or 30. Earlier heroines used to hide their age as ‘age’ was their big risk. But now such things are not happening.

Now audience has accepted the concepts of true professionalism too. Most artists are returning to acting post marriage, though they take a temporary break. Best examples are Kajol, Karishma Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Juhi Chawla, Vidya Balan and of course, Aiswarya Rai and Kareena Kapoor. Marriage has never put their career at risk nor did their demand go down. Though comeback movie of Madhuri Dixit ‘Aaja nach le’ didn’t do fair at box office, she managed to remain in the limelight. She is 45+, yet fans follow her as before. That’s the reason why she has decided to do take another chance. Now she, along with Juhi Chawla is shooting for a movie, the first time both these actresses come face to face.

If it’s the case of Aiswarya Rai, she has delivered a few hits after her marriage and people love to see her again on screen. Kareena Kapoor is the most wanted heroine of present times – movies as well as ads. Kajol has delivered 4 hits after her marriage and won 3 Filmfare awards. So, I feel right now, marriage makes heroines mature and play their roles gracefully. A positive approach has come from audience side too. Instead of seeing heroines as mere beauty toys of celluloid, they are keen on their acting skills nowadays.
