Bollywood Film Titles Derived From Hit Numbers

“Le jaayenge le jayeenge Dilwale dulhaniya le jaayenge” – This song was a very popular number from the hit movie of Shashi Kapoor, ‘Chor machaya shor’. Though the song sung by Kishore Kumar was quite popular during late 60’s, everyone has now forgotten that song. That’s only because of the magic created onscreen by the hottest couple of Bollywood – SRK and Kajol. When Aditya Chopra decided to do his debut movie in Hindi, it was Anupam Kher’s wife – actress Kiran Kherr who suggested him this title. Though the title was a bit lengthy it goes well with film story and actors and became the longest running film of Indian cinema. After that a trend has started – why should we give extra strain to our brains to search titles for our new film? Why can’t we pick an old hit song? If the title is a bit lengthy, then it’s 100% sure, our film will become superstar – Film makers began to think. Obviously we witnessed many movies onscreen with the name of old hit songs. A few clicked, but the rest failed cementing the fact that, more than the title, it’s the script and powerful actors that help the movies to run in theatres. Through this article, I would like to mention the name of a few such movies.

‘Pyar kiya to darna kya’ and ‘Jab pyar kisi se hota hai’ – Both these romantic titles look similar. Both these romantic movies of Salman Khan were released in the same year – 1998. Pyar kiya to Darna kya was picked from Mughal-E-Azam while the next, both the song and title are copied from an old hit movie of Dev Anand-Asha Parekh pair.

Now let me mention a few Shah Rukh Khan movies. From the time of DDLJ, most of his hit movie titles were derived from old Hindi songs. Karan Johar is its expert who used to choose hit song bits starting with ‘K’ only. In fact all his movies with King Khan except ‘My name is Khan’ are so. Such a few hit songs include Kuch kuch hota hai, Kabhi khushi kabhi gum, Kabhi alvida na kehna and Kal ho na ho.

Now let me mention a few more songs that have been used as film title later. Chalte Chalte, Raja ko rani se pyar ho gaya, Laaga chunari mein daag, Rab ne bana di Jodi, Phir bhi dil hai hindusthani, Mein hoon na, 1 2 ka 4, Har dil jo pyar karega, Bus itna sa kwaab hai, Chori chori, Hum hain rahi pyar ke and Yeh jo mohabbat hai.
