April 27 - A Day Exclusively For Frogs

Frogs serve us a lot though we rarely notice. When pests multiply and diseases like dengue and malaria kills a lot of people, we should know the contributions given by frogs to our environment. Frogs kill pests and mosquitoes that cause environmental hazards thus cleaning our nature. But now ponds and agricultural lands are shrinking. Frogs are being hunted and thus poor frogs are under life threat. Pollution, pesticides and climatic changes are other causes for their sudden death. To make everyone aware the importance of frogs and the contributions they give to our environment, April 27 is celebrated world wide as ‘World frog day’.

The organization ‘Save the frog’ established by Kerry Crigar is behind this celebration. It’s a bit surprising that frogs originated on earth surface before 36 crore years and they multiplied evenly to spread to different continents. They dwell most in rain forests, marine places, marshy areas, agricultural fields and wet lands. When dinosaurs get extinct from earth’s surface, frogs remained on this earth surface. When primitive man started living, frogs were there on earth surface. Gradually a friendship was developed between man and frogs. Frogs used to kill mosquitoes and pests to purify the wet lands. But things changed as soon as man began to find taste in frog’s meat and when they were used as objects in laboratories for experiments.

With the new millennium, we witnessed many actions of man forgetting the nature and environment which we are living. It resulted in drying up and pollution of wet lands, global warming and unpredictable climatic changes. Now man is interested in destroying wet lands and building huge concrete constructions, shopping malls and flats. Acres of paddy fields are left without cultivation and most of them are misused in one way or another. It’s shocking to know that with the rise of new millennium, within one decade itself, 200 types of frogs have been rubbed off from earth’s surface. 2000 types are still in endangered species, which can be erased from any earth anytime here on! But when our wetlands and nature are polluted by mosquitoes causing many contagious diseases, man has started recognizing the need of frogs for human existence. So, by reserving one day for frogs, we are returning back to our nature, No doubt!
