A Small Note On Mountains And Himalayas

 

You might have often thought about Blue Mountains and hills that reside in our nation. A lot of them are easily visible. But all those elevated places are not mountains. From sea level or earth’s surface those elevated areas with at least 2000 metre height are grouped under mountains. Heights of mountains are calculated comparing with sea level. Mountains reside in seas as well as lands and most of the islands of earth stay on such mountain peaks of seas. The longest mountain range is in Atlantic Oceans known as ‘Atlantic Ridge’. It starts from North Iceland and extends up to South Atlantic having a total length of 16K kms. Off springs of this huge mountain range have a few with 3000 feet height or more.

 

King of Mountains

 

Including the highest peak of the world- Everest, Himalayas hold almost all peaks of the world. It’s the starting point of many great rivers of India. Sindhu, Ganga and Brahmaputhra – the holy rivers of Hindus originate from great Himalayas, that’s also known to be the residing place ‘Kailasa’ of Lord Siva according to Hindu Mythology. It is the youngest folding mountain of the world and its folds give birth to numerous tiny mountains. It extends up to 2400 kms and is distributed among the countries India, China, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan and Afghanistan. It consists of Lesser ( Himachal), Outer (Sivalik) and Greater (Himadri) mountain ranges.

 

Everest – also known as Gauri Shankaram is the highest peak of the world. In addition to Indians, Tibetans and Nepalese also consider it holy. According to latest researches, Mount Everest is growing day by day. Second highest peak of the world Karakoram simply known as K2 also resides in Great Himalayas. This mountain range is seen in north-west region of North Kashmir.  

 

Next highest mountain range of the world is Kanjanjunga that stays in Nepal-Sikkim border. Now let me say a word about Annapurna – another mountain peak that stays in Himalayas. It decorates the primary position of one among those 4 mountains that stays in the core of Himalayas.

 

Mountain ranges of Kerala

 

Sahyadri is a part of Western Ghats. South India’s biggest peak is Anamudi whose  height is 1200 meters. Majority of South Indian rivers originate from Sahyadri. Agasthargudam also needs special mention.
