A Contrasting Look At Bollywood And Hollywood

We in India have been exposed since time immemorial to a bunch of movies which continue to defy all logical explanations but somehow manage to entertain us. In fact in the west there are huge followers of Indian movies and I am not just talking about the people of India who live there. They seem to be fascinated by the extra albeit unnecessary grandeur and over melodramatic nature of our movies.

Bollywood on an average produces around 1000 movies a year out of which 5 to 10 turn out to be good. I don’t mean to criticize Bollywood or anything by this but I would like to point out some of the differences between this and its American counterpart. In contrast Hollywood produces around 200 movies a year out of which at least 50 to 100 turn out to be good. Now why this ballsy difference?

A part of the reason might have something to do with the budget. The amount of money an Indian producer spends on a movie is the same amount that a reputable Hollywood actor earns per movie. But that could not be all, could it? There are some Hollywood movies made on shoestring budgets which turn out to miles ahead of the best Bollywood movie. So then what is the real deal?

Maybe it has something to do with the attitude of the Indian people. Maybe we Indians are so used to the staple diet of stupidity as a form of entertainment that we don’t really care about what is good. I’m not saying that Hollywood is perfect. It is in fact far from perfect and there are movies that make you cringe but the number of such movies is really low and they seem to keep improving. That is exactly what Bollywood needs to do. Improve. And it can only improve if we as an audience stop paying to watch bad movies. A movie like EK Tha Tiger which was a mindless bore turns out to be one of the highest earning movies this year while a movie like Dark Knight Rises doesn’t stay in Indian cinema halls for more than 2 weeks. And that my friends sum up our taste.
