Vishwa Mohan Bhatt Biography

Vishwa Mohan Bhatt is Grammy-winning Hindustani classical music instrumentalist, a Mohan Veena (slide guitar) specialist. He is also known by the name, V. M. Bhatt. His Grammy award winning album A Meeting by the River with Ry Cooder released on Water Lily Acoustics label. Guitar A La Hindustan (1992), Saradamani (1992), Gathering Rain Clouds (1993), A Meeting by the River (1993),  Bourbon & Rosewater (1995), Mumtaz Mahal (1995), Saltanah (1996), Tabula Rasa (1996), Sounds of Strings (1996), Mohan's Veena (2008), Desert Slide (2010), Mohan's Veena II (2010) and Groove Caravan (2011) are his released albums, either solo or in collaborations. He is a recipient of Padma Shree by Government of India in 2002, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1998 and Grammy Award (Best World Music Album) – A Meeting by the River (With Ry Cooder) in the year 1993.

 

He was born in Jaipur on July 27, 1950, where he currently resides with his family of wife and two sons. His parents were music teachers and performing musicians who gave music lessons tp Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. His elder son Salil Bhatt is a renowned Mohan veena player and his young son  Saurabh Bhatt is a famous composer.  Bhatt's grandson Satvik Bhatt is also a musician and a Limca Book Of World Record holder. His nephew Krishna Mohan Bhatt is a sitar player, teacher and scholar from Jaipur.

 

Vishwa Mohan Bhatt came to limelight with Grammy awards. Apart from award winning album, A Meeting by the River with Ry Cooder, his major albums of 1990’s were released in Water Lily Acoustics label. Bhatt is popular for his fusion music and collaborations with Western artists such as Taj Mahal, Bela Fleck and Jerry Douglas.
