Uma Charan Mohanty Biography 
Uma Charan Mohanty is an Indian geologist and meteorologist from Odisha, India. He also serves as an emeritus professor at the School of Earth, Ocean and Climate Sciences of the Indian Institute of Technology. Best known for his researches on the Indian summer monsoon, he is also an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies, and also the recipient of many awards including the most prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, for the year 1993.
Uma Charan Mohanty was born on June 29, 1948 in Odisha. He graduated from Utkal University in 1969, and completed his Master’s degree in 1971 from the same university. He obtained a PhD in Tropical meteorology in 1978 from Hydrometeorological Centre of Russia. After studies he returned to India. He joined the Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar (IIT BBS) as a senior scientific officer, and worked with the same institute till 1992. Then he was sent on deputation to the Department of Science and Technology as the joint director and head of the Research Division, for 3 years.
He returned to Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar after that, and then joined the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD) in 1998 as a professor at the Centre for Atmospheric Sciences. He later became its director and served as HAG professor till his superannuation in 2013. Since then he serves as an emeritus professor of IIT BBS. He currently serves as the president of Odisha Bigyan Academy. Known for his studies on Indian summer monsoon and Tropical cyclones, he is a recipient of M. G. Deshpande Award, MAUSAM Award, S. S. Bhatnagar Prize, Samanta Chandra Sekhar Award, National Award in Atmospheric Sciences and Technology and many more.
