Vijayalakshmi Ravindranath Biography 
Vijayalakshmi Ravindranath is an Indian neuroscientist and academician from Chennai born in 1953. She specializes on brain related disorders including neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. She currently serves as Professor of Centre for Neuroscience, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. She is the Founder Director of the National Brain Research Centre, Gurgaon and also Centre for Neuroscience at Indian Institute of Science. She is also known for promoting neuroscience research and establishing major neuroscience research centres in India. She is a recipient of Padma Shri, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize and many other honours.
Vijayalakshmi Ravindranath was born in Chennai on 18 October 1953. She studied from Andhra University and received her Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1981 from Mysore University. After studies she worked at the National Cancer Institute, USA as a Postdoctoral Fellow, followed by National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Bangalore. In 1999, she aided help to Department of Biotechnology, government of India to establish National Brain Research Centre (NBRC). She has also published many of her research works as papers and books.
She is an elected fellow of several Indian academies: Indian Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy and National Academy of Medical Sciences. For her overall contributions towards the field of science, he has been honoured with fourth civilian honour Padma Shri by government of India in 2010. She is also a recipient of numerous prestigious honours including Om Prakash Bhasin Award for Science & Technology in 2001, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in 1996, J.C. Bose Fellowship, S.S. Bhatnagar Award of Indian National Science Academy, KP Bhargava Medal of Indian National Science Academy and many more.
