Raghunath Anant Mashelkar Biography

Raghunath Anant Mashelkar served as the Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research in India. He is also known as Ramesh Mashelkar. He did pioneering works in polymer science and engineering and got many international laurels. He championed the cause of the developing world.

 

He was born on 1st January 1943 in Mashel in Goa. His childhood days were very difficult and marked by utter poverty. It was very tough for him to continue his education. He was the rank holder in the Matriculation examination. He studied at University of Bombay and obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Chemical engineering in 1966 and got his Ph.D in 1969. He is the president of Global Research Alliance and the former President of the Indian National Science Academy and UK Institution of Chemical Engineers.

 

He served as the director general of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research for more than eleven years. He was elected as the foreign fellow of the US National Academy of Engineering, Fellow of Royal Academy of Engineering, UK, and Fellow of the World Academy of Arts and Science, USA. He won the JRD Tata Corporate Leadership Award in 1998. On 16th November 2005, he received the BusinessWeek award from George H.W. Bush, the former President of South Africa.

 

He has made contributions to the thermodynamics of swelling, superswelling and shrinking polymers and engineering analysis of Non-Newtonian flows. He headed the challenge against the US patent on the turmeric and chaired the Technical committee that challenged to revoke the US patents on Basmati Rice.

 

He has won more than fifty awards and medals. The important awards are S. S. Bhatnagar Prize in 1982, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Technology Award in 1991, G. D. Birla Scientific Research Award in 1993, Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for Excellence in Public Administration and Management Sciences, World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) Medal of Engineering Excellence by WFEO, Lifetime Achievement Award by Indian Science Congress, the Science medal by the Academy of Science for the Developing World, Ashutosh Mookherjee Memorial Award by Indian Science Congress, etc.
