U. N. Dhebar Biography

U. N. Dhebar was a prominent politician and freedom fighter. Known to be an Indian Independence activist, he served as the Chief Minister of Saurashtra State from 1948 to 1954 and was an elected member to Indian parliament. He got elected to Lok Sabha in 1962 from Rajkot constituency. Dhebar remained a prominent politician associated with Indian National Congress during his life time. He served as the President of the Indian National Congress from 1955 to 1959. In 1973, government of India honoured him with Padmabhushan for his overall contributions towards the field of social service. He passed away in 1977.

 

His full name is Uchharangrai Navalshankar Dhebar. He was born on 21 September 1905 in Gangajala, near Jamnagar of present day Gujarat state. His father’s name is Navalshankar. He completed his law studies and started his practice as a lawyer. But the call of freedom prompted him to give up his law practice and he plunged into the freedom struggle movement, deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi. He joined freedom struggle movement in the year 1936. He also started his political career almost at the same time, when he turned active in regional level politics.

 

He served as the President of Rajkot Mill Kamdar Mandal in 1936, followed by Rajkot Praja Mandal in 1938-1939. In 1941 he represented Viramgam for Satyagraha Movement and got arrested. He also got arrested during Quit India Movement. After Indian independence, he turned more active with politics, and earned fame for his efforts in the formation of United State of Kathiawar. When it was later renamed to Saurastra, he served as its Chief Minister as well. He died in 1977. Rajkot Airport is named after him.
