Triloki Nath Khoshoo Biography

Triloki Nath Khoshoo was an environment scientist and botanist, who has served as an administrator for many science organizations. He was the co-founder of the Department of Botany at Khalsa College, Amritsar soon after Partition, and later joined National Botanical Gardens, Lucknow in 1964 where he worked under its founder director Kailas Nath Kaul. Later Triloki became the director of the organization and played an important role in improving its stature and renaming as National Botanical Research Institute in 1978.

 

For his contributions towards science and research, specifically botany, he was honoured with third highest civilian Padma Bhushan by government of India in 1992. He was a recipient of the prestigious Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Award instituted in 1956 by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) to recognize Indian researchers in the agricultural field, and he received the honour in 1971.

 

Triloki Nath Khoshoo was born on 1927 in Kashmir. After his studies he started his professional career as co-founder of the Department of Botany which was shifted to Khalsa College, Amritsar, soon after the partition of India. He also served as its chairman for a short period and then joined National Botanical Gardens, Lucknow in 1964. Under his tenure as director the institution was renamed as National Botanical Research Institute. He was appointed in the Department of Environment in Indira Gandhi’s cabinet in 1982, and was given the position of Secretary, and the responsibility of developing an Environment policy for the nation.

 

He joined The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in 1982. He conducted research works, and published over 250 papers during his professional career. 'Mahatma Gandhi: An Apostle of Applied Human Ecology' (1996) is his published book. He was honored by the United Nations with Sasakawa Environmental Prize the same year. He passed away in 2002.
